Deconstructing the 9/11 Dot Disconnection: a book review by Erik Larson

It is a non-controversial fact that the NSA, CIA and FBI missed a number of opportunities to disrupt the 9/11 plot. Many, but not all, of these failures were documented by the four main investigations that dealt with pre-9/11 intelligence failures: those by the Congressional Joint Inquiry, the 9/11 Commission, the Department of Justice Inspector General and the CIA Inspector General. The best-known investigation, the 9/11 Commission, ultimately concluded that 9/11 was preceded by “four kinds of failures: in imagination, policy, capabilities, and management” (339). This is the narrative largely held to by mainstream politicians and media, but these explanations do not credibly account for what happened at the NSA, CIA and FBI in the years, months and weeks leading up to 9/11. This has been demonstrated by a number of researchers, but Kevin Fenton’s* book, Disconnecting the Dots, has the most comprehensive documentation and in-depth analysis to date. Primarily using the official reports, the available source records and some reporting by mainstream media and journalists, Fenton documents how specific CIA and FBI officials engaged in deliberate efforts to protect the 9/11 plot from discovery and disruption by FBI investigators, and that the most probable explanation is that this was done in order to enable the 9/11 attacks.

How the FBI and 9/11 Commission Suppressed Key Evidence about Hani Hanjour, alleged hijack pilot of AAL 77 by Mark Gaffney

According to most of the flight instructors he worked with, Hani Hanjour was a terrible pilot. Even so, he was “certified in April 1999 as an “Airplane Multi-Engine Land/Commercial Pilot” by Daryl Strong”, an FAA “designated pilot examiner”, and flight instructor “Eddie Shalev, who certified Hanjour to rent a Cessna 172 from Congressional Air Charters just three days after Marcel Bernard, the chief instructor at Freeway, refused to rent Hanjour the very same plane.” According to a 9/11 Commission staff ‘Memoranda for the Record’, Eddy Shalev is an Israeli national and “served in the Israeli Defense Forces”.

Questions for Miles Kara on NORAD (and Other) Exercises by Erik Larson

June 2009, 9/11 Commission Team 8 staff member Miles Kara launched a blog- 9/11 Revisited- and has been taking questions from the public, as well posting articles expanding on the 9/11 Commission’s work. In this open letter to Miles Kara I pose a set of questions that have been raised in various forms since 9/11, and since the release of the 9/11 Commission Report. In addition, there are new questions based on 9/11 Commission records released to the National Archives, January 2009. Hopefully, Miles Kara will fill in the details.

Those 9/11 Commission Minders Again by Kevin Fenton

Kevin Fenton blogs on a memo detailing additional strange behavior of Commission ‘minders’ on a trip to Canada; again, the minders are acting as particpants, answering questions for witnesses, taking verbatim notes. Memo also notes that a minder had an opportunity to “poison the well” with a witness, as she had dinner with the witness the night before.

Zelikow, NORAD False Testimony & 9/11 Commission Records – 3 Articles by Kevin Fenton

3 recent articles by Kevin Fenton:

The first 2 are based on a memo and an email chain in the 9/11 Commission records at the National Archives regarding the false statements made by NORAD officials to the 9/11 Commission, and the Commission’s response.

The 3rd article is based on a comment posted by ‘Philip Zelikow’, apparently the Executive Director of the 9/11 Commission, on the ‘Zelikow Caught in a Whopper article:
